Dr. Emmanuela Abrose and The Super Woman Awards - 2025 In The Lake Zone.
Dr.
Emmanuela E. Ambrose is a distinguished pediatrician and hematologist based in
Mwanza, Tanzania. She serves as a consultant at Bugando Medical Centre, a major
teaching and referral hospital that caters to approximately 40% of Tanzania's
population. Additionally, she holds a faculty position at the Catholic
University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS), where she contributes to the
Department of Pediatrics and Child Health. While specific details about her
educational background are not publicly available, her current roles suggest
extensive training in medicine and specialization in pediatrics and hematology.
Dr.
Ambrose's clinical and research endeavors are primarily focused on sickle cell
disease (SCD), a significant public health concern in Tanzania. She has been
instrumental in advancing the understanding and management of SCD through
various initiatives:
- SPHERE Trial: As a principal investigator, Dr. Ambrose led the
Stroke Prevention with Hydroxyurea Enabled through Research and Education
(SPHERE) trial. This phase 2 study demonstrated that hydroxyurea,
administered at the maximum tolerated dose, significantly reduced
transcranial Doppler velocities, thereby lowering the risk of primary
stroke in children with SCD in Tanzania.
- Newborn Screening and
Surveillance: Dr. Ambrose co-authored a
comprehensive surveillance study assessing the prevalence of sickle cell
trait and disease across nine regions in northwestern Tanzania. The
findings underscored the high burden of SCD and emphasized the need for
targeted newborn screening programs.
- Capacity Building: Beyond research, Dr. Ambrose is dedicated to building
local capacity for SCD management. She is involved in training healthcare
professionals in transcranial Doppler screening and hydroxyurea dosing,
aiming to enhance stroke prevention strategies in low-resource settings.
Through
her multifaceted roles in clinical care, research, and education, Dr. Ambrose
continues to make significant contributions to improving outcomes for children
with sickle cell disease in Tanzania.
