On Wednesday, November 13, 2019, the Burundian Cabinet officially approved the Swahili language to begin being used in official offices, public institutions and various organizations within the country. The decision was reached after a long-standing tensions over the legalization of the language within the functional beams.
Initially, the languages of Rundi, French and English were used. With these decisions, Swahili continues to gain a broader range of popular and popular global languages. Although already in the national curriculum it was being taught to schools and colleges as a subject, the government had not included it in its official language list.
It is known that Burundi is a part of African countries that for decades have used French as the official language. Swahili in the country has long been used in a few parts of the country, including the Rumonge and Makamba regions, which also have close ties with the United Republic of Tanzania. Other areas are the neighborhoods of Biza, Jabe, Kamenge, Buyenzi and Buterere, all within Bujumbura. These links, as with the two regions mentioned above, have a strong interaction of local citizens as well as those from the Democratic Republic of Congo (Congolese) and Tanzania (Tanzanians).
This statement gives great hope to the citizens of other neighboring countries in Burundi, in visiting and enjoying the opportunities available. Some citizens, especially from Swahili-speaking nations have been afraid to visit the country because of the obstacle of not understanding Rundi, the country's most widely used language. This fear has caused some of them to miss the opportunity to be laughed at in various sectors of the economy including tourism, education and trade. The fact is that investment opportunities are still very much in the country to date.
Made Swahili as one of the official languages in the country, for Pan Africanists, is an inclusive and comforting step towards the important plan of uniting our East African Community (EAC) into a federation. one government, one parliament, one currency, one language, one national anthem (the community already exists and is widely sung in all secondary and primary schools in Burundi), one army etc. It is the formation of federations within Africa that will take us to the final stage of the founding of the United States of Africa.
With heartfelt gratitude as we congratulate the Burundian government on these positive, positive, inclusive and patriotic decisions that show how important Africans are to love ours. This endorsement is in line with various local efforts made by schools and colleges to teach this language, various media such as Izere radio, Bonesha FM, National Radio, Isanganiro etc. that use Swahili language in their various leisure and community education programs. , Swahili will continue to grow and spread.
It is time for us to learn the importance, meaning and value of coming together as Africans, by investing in our own things. No one was loved by caring for others more than themselves. Burundi continues to prove that they are not only ready to be part of the East African Community, but also the African Union in the future.
